What is Chol HaMoed?
Chol Hamoed (literally, “the weekday of the holiday”) refers to the “intermediate period” of the festivals of Passover and Sukkot. They are the days sandwiched between the beginning and ending holy days of both festivals.
Is it permissible to work on Chol HaMoed?
According to Sephardim, the halacha is that work on Chol HaMoed is a Rabbinic prohibition. A strenuous activity (one that involves exertion) is forbidden even if it doesn’t involve any Melacha. For example, it’s forbidden to move heavy furniture (unless there’s a need see below).
What do you do on Chol HaMoed?
As part of Kavod, some have the practice to leave the table cloth on the table all of Chol HaMoed. As part of Kavod, one is not obligated to have a bread meal, however, it is preferable to do so. There’s a requirement of Simcha on Chol Hamoed just like there is on Yom Tov.
Is Chol HaMoed derabanan?
↑ Tosfot (Chagiga 18a s.v. cholo) and Rosh (Moed Katan 1:1) hold that the entirety of work on Chol HaMoed is derabanan. Such is the opinion of the Rambam (Yom Tov 7:1), Mordechai (Moed Katan n. 835), and Nemukei Yosef (Moed Katan 1a s.v. Gemara).
